Description

.shadow css classThis project was a speculation home designed by Phil GilanFarr, AIA and built by Costalupes Construction.

THE GOAL

The goal for this project was to create a speculation home with large, unobstructed views of Lake Tahoe. The architect wanted a reverse barrel roof in the living room with almost all glass looking at the lake. This was an engineering challenge in making the structure safe for both vertical and lateral loads (snow, wind and earthquakes) with virtually no shear walls three stories up.

THE RESULT

We were able to design very stiff bent steel beams with wood framing between to create the reverse barrel design. We were also able to create small steel moment frames to transfer lateral loads to the ground, picking up additional loads from the other stories; ultimately making the architects vision work.
